  • Full-time (40h/week)
  • Student and employee status (36 months studies programme)

The PhD student will be a member of the PhyMS research unit within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication as well as the Developmental and Cellular Biology group within the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biology at the University of Luxembourg. He/she will work under joint supervision of Prof. Dr. Jan Lagerwall and Prof. Dr. Jens-Christian Schwamborn. You will, on the one hand, be using microfluidic technology to produce liquid crystal elastomer tubes and evaluating their function as soft actuators, on the other hand, you will do research on the growth of ‘organoids’, miniaturized versions of biological organs growing in culture medium.

Your Role
  • Write a thesis in the domain of chemistry or physics, with a strong side interest in biology
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary research intersecting materials physics and chemistry and biology and biotechnology
  • Participate in the research project described above
  • Your Profile
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry or materials science
  • Experience in quantitative research methods and practical work in chemistry and physics labs
  • Knowledge of materials physics and chemistry, including optics, mechanical properties and polymer chemistry and physics
  • Openness to interdisciplinary research and an interest in biology/biotechnology.
  • Commitment and capacity for team work and critical thinking;
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English.

We offer
  • Personal work space at the University.
  • Dynamic and multicultural environment.
  • You will be part of an exciting interdisciplinary thrust linking cutting-edge biology and materials physics research activities.

Candidates should submit the following documents:
  • Motivation letter
  • Curriculum vitae
  • List of publications (if available)
  • Copies of diplomas

Post-Doctorate in Simulation and Modeling of Liquid Crystals, with São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) Scholarship

The Complex Fluids group of the Institute of Physics (IP), University of São Paulo / Brazil, offers an opportunity for a postdoctoral fellowship (FAPESP financial support), in the framework of the Thematic Project "Structural and biophysical properties of native and modified lipoproteins".

Coordinated by Professor Antonio Martins Figueiredo Neto, from the IP, the project has Professor Cristiano Luis Pinto de Oliveira (also from IP) as Principal Investigator and brings together researchers from different universities and specialties in São Paulo: physics, medicine, odontology and nutrition.

The fellow will develop projects in the field of simulation and structural modeling of oriented liquid crystals using small-angle scattering methods. Candidate must have experience in programming, modeling methods, scattering and diffraction. The work has multidisciplinary characteristics combining theoretical and experimental topics in physics, chemistry and biology. The aim of this project is to develop simulation and analysis tools for the modeling of experimental data from small-angle scattering in order to permit the structural characterization of liquid crystal systems and retrieve structural information.

The project will be developed at USP under the supervision of professors Antonio Martins Figueiredo Neto and Cristiano Pinto de Oliveira. Candidates should send an e-mail to (crislpo@if.usp.br) with his curriculum vitae (including a list of publications), a cover letter and a letter of recommendation. A distance interview will be held with the candidates.

The position is open to Brazilians and foreigners. The selected fellow will receive FAPESP Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the amount of R$ 7.174,80 (about USD 2,300.00 / tax-free) per month and Technical Reserve. The Technical Reserve of PD Grant is equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the scholarship and is intended to meet unforeseen expenses directly related to the research activity. The duration of the scholarship is for one year, and may be extended for another period of one year.

If the PD grant holder lives in a different city and needs to move to São Paulo, he/she may be entitled to a grant-installation. More information about the FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship is available at www.fapesp.br/bolsas/pd.

Interested candidates should apply until March 31, 2018, sending an e-mail to Professor C. L. P. Oliveira at (crislpo@if.usp.br).

Post-Doctorate in Complex Fluid Physics in Brazil, with São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) Scholarship

Coordinated by Professor Antonio Martins Figueiredo Neto, from the IP, the project brings together researchers from different universities and specialties in São Paulo: physics, medicine, odontology and nutrition.

The fellow will develop projects in the field of structural characterization of lipoproteins using X-ray scattering methods, linear and non-linear optical techniques. Candidate must have experience in non-linear optics techniques and/or small-angle X-ray scattering. The work has multidisciplinary characteristics insofar as the lipoproteins to be investigated will be provided by physicians and odontologists collaborators linked to the thematic project. In particular we are interested in the effects of the diabetes mellitus on lipoproteins, structure and function. The study of lipoproteins presents a great interface with the physico-chemistry of lyotropic liquid crystals.

The project will be developed at USP under the supervision of professors Antonio Martins Figueiredo Neto (IFUSP), Cristiano Pinto de Oliveira (IFUSP), Maria Cristina Izar (UNIFESP), Nágila Damasceno (FSP-USP) and Maria Aparecida Neves Jardini (ICT-UNESP). Candidates should send an e-mail to (afigueiredo@if.usp.br) with his curriculum vitae (including a list of publications), a cover letter and a letter of recommendation.
