Lawrence (Larry) Honaker is a postdoctoral research associate in the Emergent Biological Systems group of Siddharth Deshpande in the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter at Wageningen University and Research. He completed his M.S. in Chemical Physics at Kent State University and his Ph.D. in Physics in the Experimental Soft Matter Group at the University of Luxembourg. His main research interests are in liquid crystal-functionalized sensing platforms as well as using microfluidics for the production of core-shell structures.

While some cholesteric LC droplets can be stabilized with a polymer like PVA, when the sample dries out, you get a mix of intact droplets and splashed LC, which makes for very striking images.
Jury comment: The picture represents a beautiful pattern formed in cholesteric LC droplets.
